Around the table: are multiple-touch surfaces better than single-touch for children's collaborative interactions?

چکیده
This paper presents a classroom study that investigated the potential of using touch tabletop technology to support children’s collaborative learning interactions. Children aged 710 worked in groups of three on a collaborative planning task in which they designed a seating plan for their classroom. In the single-touch condition, the tabletop surface allowed only one child to interact with the digital content at a time. In the multiple-touch condition, the children could interact with the digital content simultaneously. Results showed that touch condition did not affect the frequency or equity of interactions, but did influence the nature of children’s discussion. In the multiple-touch condition, children talked more about the task; in the singletouch condition, they talked more about turn taking. We also report age and gender differences.

متن کاملThe Impact of Interactive Tables and Multiple Surfaces Technologies Towards Communication and Learning
Multi-touch interactive tables are vast becoming „must-have‟ items for enhancing the collaborative learning experience. There is extensive amount of literature promoting and highlighting the impact of collaborative learning around interactive tables towards learning, communication and social interaction. In this paper we present several of our existing work investigating the communication impac...
متن کاملCollaborative Learning Skills in Multi-touch Tables for UML Software Design
The use of Multi-touch interfaces for collaborative learning has received significant attention. Their ability to synchronously accommodate multiple users is an advantage in co-located collaborative design tasks. This paper explores the Multi-touch interface’s potential in collaborative Unified Modeling Language diagramming by comparing it to a PC-based tool, looking at the Collaborative Learni...
متن کاملInteractive Multi-touch Surfaces for Software Visualization
Most software systems are developed by teams of people. The tools used to develop and maintain these systems are primarily designed from a single-user perspective and are bound to Integrated Development Environments (IDEs). These design decisions do not allow users to collaboratively navigate through software visualizations or to analyse software easily. We are investigating whether multi-touch...
متن کاملTool Support for Map Interface Design: Individual versus Collaborative Approach
Recent advances in computer hardware have improved support for co-located collaborative task completion, such as through large, multi-user, multi-touch tables. Software engineers need to complement these advances with improved software user interfaces that reflect any different behaviours that arise from the different interaction techniques (e.g. multi-user, multitouch tables versus single-user...
